Sugarcane is Where It All Starts

First discovered over 10,000 years ago, sugarcane is one of the oldest crops known to mankind. Still, we’re learning more about it each day, and Florida Crystals is dedicated to the continued study of this incredible plant in order to keep crafting the highest quality raw cane sugar today’s bakers and cooks demand.

“The reed that produces honey without bees.”

The Greeks who referred to sugarcane as "the reed that produces honey without bees", were enamored with its ability to produce such sweet, delicious juices…just as we are today. A member of the grass family, unlike most crops, sugarcane can regrow after successive harvest.

As a C4 plant sugarcane is exceptionally efficient at pulling in CO2 from the atmosphere. This process is so efficient that even though C4 plants make up just 3% of plant species on Earth, they account for 25% of all carbon fixation.

Just as impressive, a single sugarcane stalk can produce 30 teaspoons of sugar, 6 teaspoons of molasses, 1 quart of water and 6 ounces of bagasse, which we use to power our mills. Remarkable what sugarcane can do, isn’t it?
